Professor Amitava Bhattacharjee in Astrophysical Sciences' Plasma Program receives Simons Foundation award

The first ever Simons FoundationMathematical and Physical Sciences Award supporting fusion science has been granted to ProfessorBhattacharjeewho will lead an international team of scientists and mathematicians to design the world’s best stellarator, a type of fusion reactor to produce energy.

The private grant of $8M over a period of 4 years will enable interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve novel advances in physics, mathematics and computation of practical importance in fusion research.  The work undertaken by members of the Plasma Program in Astrophysical Sciences may lead to a deeper understanding of astrophysical plasmas as well.
